main image

The second grade had an exciting field trip to the Birds of Prey Center in Awendaw last Friday. The children got to learn from experts about the natural history of the raptors. They observed a flight demonstration and were educated on the flight patterns, hunting techniques, and migratory patterns of the red tail hawk, black vulture, wood owl, burrowing owl, and yellow-billed kite. Everyone got to practice patience as they waited for the wood owl to decide he was ready to leave his perch in a nearby tree! The second graders learned the value of these birds in our ecosystem and things that they can do to protect them. It was a wonderful day and everyone was in awe of these majestic creatures that God created!

The outing began with a a boat ride through the beautiful black water swamp filled with towering cypress and tupelo trees. The children were able to observe alligators, wading birds, and beautiful flora, all while learning about the history of the gardens.

After the boat ride, the 3rd graders learned about plants, pollination, and photosynthesis from local experts. They also learned about the stages of the butterfly life cycle and were then rewarded with a visit to the Butterfly House, filled with beautiful plant life and hundreds of butterflies.

The students finished the day with a picnic lunch and some fun on the adjacent playground. The day was filled with joy, learning, and laughter. We are sure this is a trip that will not be forgotten!
