Lower School Music
We learn that God himself sings over us and what great joy that brings us.
In our Lower School Music program, we understand that music is God's gift to us. We use it to worship him, we use it to express our faith and our emotions, we use it to learn about our customs, our history, and to celebrate. Music is always about singing, playing, exploring and moving.
We learn that music is fun. We learn about fast and slow, loud and quiet, high and low. We learn about our four voices, steady beat, and patterns. In Kindergarten, we often tell stories and add music sounds. We jump, we skip, we climb and we play. We enjoy playing musical games.
We learn quarter note, eight note pairs, and quarter rest rhythm patterns. We learn about high and low and use the solfeggio pitches so, la and mi. We also discover that music has form and we concentrate on AB and ABA form. We love learning about Mozart and Peter and the Wolf in first grade. Playing instruments and playing music games are part of how we learn. We also like performing music and PCA gives us several opportunities to perform.
We add half notes, half rests, and whole notes to our list or notes we can identify and play. We learn that music has many dynamics and we begin to identify loud and soft with their musical names of piano and forte. We learn about tempo, the music
We add sixteenth notes to our list of notes that we can identify, read, and play. We learn that we can follow the dynamic signs of crescendo, decrescendo, mezzo forte and mezzo piano. Composers of the month are added and we enjoy listening to music from Baroque music, Romantic music, and Modern music. We also begin to learn about hymn composers. Tempo and tempo terms become part of our vocabulary. We enjoy learning about form and how songs are built. Rondo form, introduction, bridge, and coda become part of our vocabulary. We play recorders and ukuleles. We add syncopation to our rhythm patterns and combinations of sixteenth notes and eighth note patterns. We learn about theme and variation of form and enjoy making up variations to songs and performing these for each other. Reading music is a big thing this year and can be quite difficult. We take all that we have learned in the past and we really concentrate on putting it all together.
