Laying the Groundwork for a Lifetime of Excellent Writing

main image

PCA is excited to announce the addition of our new ELA Writing program, IEW (Institute for Excellence in Writing). Last year, our teachers spent 4 days in training with lead expert Linda Mikottis learning the program's curriculum and implementation. IEW's mission is to "equip teachers with methods and materials that will aid them in training their students to become confident and competent communicators and thinkers" (IEW, 1999).

With all Lower School teachers (and Upper school ELA) trained, we are excited to see the results this program will bring to our students. The work is already underway and our students are right on track. This week, second grade students worked on creating their very first "key word outline." They read a short story together, identify key words, create an outline, then re-tell their story using their outline words. K-5 parents, keep a watch out for this work and make sure to ask your children about it at home.

What a great start to PCA's Homecoming Week as upper school students filled the hallways dressed in Day 1 of their road trip attire: West Coast California! We enjoyed the fun-loving spirit and the creativity in the costumes.

We have a full week of exciting activities for our students for Homecoming 2019 as we celebrate our theme "All Roads Lead Home"! Here's a look at what's ahead:

Spirit Days (Grades 6-12): Spirit Days will have our students taking a road trip across the country and coming home to PCA.

Tuesday: Wild West Texas - dress like cowboys/cowgirls

Wednesday: New York Country Club - dress preppy

Thursday: Our Nation's Capital, Washington DC - dress patriotic with red, white and blue

Friday: All Roads Lead Home to South Carolina - dress in PCA spirit wear (grades K-5 may also participate on Friday!)

Banner Decorating Contest (Grades 6-12): Upper School students can show their school spirit as each grade will create a Homecoming banner to be displayed in the gym during our pep rally. Students will earn points based on their Eagle Pride!

Pep Rally (Grades K-12): Let's get fired up for our Homecoming Game! Students will meet in the gym for an all school pep rally on Friday, September 13 at 2:25 pm in the gym. Parents are welcome to join us!

Homecoming Football Game (Everyone!!!): The PCA Fighting Eagles take on W.W. King on Friday, September 13 at Park West Field. Kickoff is 7:30 pm. Let's pack the stands! Homecoming King and Queen will be announced!

Homecoming Dance (Grades 9-12): Saturday, September 14 from 7 pm to 10 pm in the PCA Gym. Tickets are $20 if purchased online in advance or $25 at the door. Payment link and details on how to pay online are coming soon.
