Lower School Spanish Gets Prickly!

The second grade Spanish Class stuck it out even when things got prickly, and had a fun time learning about Cacti, or Nopales, as referred to in the Spanish language.

Lower School Spanish Teacher, Tonya Whitehead, said she got the idea for the unit about cacti through Isaiah 41:19. "He said that He put the plants and trees that He created in the perfect environment for them. If He put this much thought and care into creating trees and plants and cacti, consider how much time and love went into creating us!"

Students started off decorating cactus cut-outs and discussed all the things that a cactus can do. When asked what facts they learned about cacti, the class was very eager to share!

“They can grow up to be taller than the school.”

“That white bugs really like it.”

“They create white fluff that can be turned into cotton.”

“They have spines as protection!”

“They collect water!”

They also learned that you can eat this interesting plant. Señora Whitehead passed out napkins and a small piece of pickled cactus to each student. This treat was met with mixed reviews, from

“It tastes so weird!” according to Athan Dimitrious to“It’s spicy!" and “It tastes so good!"

Students left the class with new and exciting facts about the spiky, green plant.
